I’m moving to Silicon Valley and joining Vivaty

by justingibbs on September 17, 2008

I’m heading back to the start-up life and joining Vivaty as a Senior Product Manager. My friends already mock me for my fascination with virtual worlds so they see it as my dream job. And when you take virtual worlds, add start-up, add a great team, and plop it down in Silicon Valley – it pretty much is my dream job. True it’s risky to be leaving a stable company like Experian in this time of economic meltdown, but to me it isn’t risky at all. Vivaty has a lot going for it.

That looks like a lot of opportunity rather than risk.

It’s exciting to be getting into the virtual worlds industry on the ground floor. The whole industry is still looking for the killer app that will attract a mainstream audience. I of course think that the killer app is immersive story. But even if I’m wrong, I have confidence in myself and the Vivaty team to discover whatever the killer app is.

Gaby - Thanks. And congrats on your new position with Echo & Shadow. I've been following them for a while, can't wait to see what you all come up with. We'll definitely have to get together some time, chat about character bots in virtual worlds.
  • best of luck to you! I was one of the first to try out Vivaty (on Parallels/Bootcamp on a Mac...please work on a Mac version ;)) and was very sad about the bad timing with Lively's launch because that stole a lot of thunder from this great product. I'm working with Echo & Shadow now (as product manager as well) on bots with personality for missions in virtual worlds, maybe we can talk about it some day a bit more :-)

  • Justin, we're excited to see you come aboard, and as our good friend "thinkagain" points out, there's plenty of work for us to tackle together. I'm glad you'll be helping in our efforts. Already we have many many users who are deeply engaged with the service via Facebook, AIM and other channels, and these folks have great ideas for how to make things even better. That's the advantage of actually having a product that's in the market, vs some of the other competitors -- you can actually get a great customer dialogue with real data to help guide future decisions. See you soon!

think again - That's the fun of a start-up isn't it? We'll see how it turns out in the next 6 months, a year.
  • good luck justin!

There is absolutely no way that Vivaty will survive and thrive in this market. Lively, Hangout.net, Just Leap In and Smallworlds all offer a much better and more stable application. Take a look at the Facebook reviews for Vivaty's Target and Coke application. These brands must be throwing up about their decision to use Vivaty. Finally, there is absolutely no way that Vivaty's proprietary plug in will ever reach more than a handful of users on the Web.
