On Tuesday I had the privilege of meeting some of the people behind the effort to keep Google Lively from shutting down at the end of the month. They’ve set up a web site to try and convince Google to keep Lively, well alive.
I spoke with them because we think Vivaty is the closest thing to Google Lively out there. It’s browser based and true 3D. Vivaty does most everything Lively does, some other stuff, and some similar stuff just differently.
I met with KosmiK Guru, RandomHuman, JMichael, and a few other Livelyzens for an hour in Vivaty first. They were impressed with the look of our 3D and the ability to customize your own scenes. Many things appealed to them but what they really wanted to show me was Lively and their creations. So before I knew it I was hopping off to Lively.
I’ve used Lively before but hopping around and seeing how these Livelyzens spoke of their experiences there and creations made me a bit sad to know it was closing. Sure it’s competition but that’s what we in the virtual world industry need right now, and more of it not less.
I have to say, I’m going to be sad to see Lively go.

Vivaty is still in beta, as are most virtual worlds. And unlike many other Internet services that carry the beta label, virtual worlds tend to hark back to the pre-Google days when beta really meant something. During this beta period Vivaty is continually adding features and improving stability. It's quite a challenge trying to work within a web browser, but it seems to be what most people expect of virtual worlds.
As far as similarities, if we're talking browser based and true 3D virtual worlds, there are only a few out there – ExitReality, Hangout.net, etc. Given this handful, Vivaty is very comparable to Lively.
But if you're here just to rip, rip away.
Hi
I'm a member of the Digiteendreamteam and we're protesting lively's shut down. We've been using lively to teach seventh graders about digital citizenship and we're heartbroken that lively's shutting down. If you want to help us, please sign our patition. The link to my blog is below and you can take a look at our blog. If you're really sad to see lively go, please come and join us in our fight to save lively. Thank you.
errrrr vivaty similar to lively? no way. Vivaty hardly runs on any computer without crashing, has a horrible camera perspective, very few customization options, lack of avatars interactions and the worst chat box ever. No wonder that site is always empty. You spoke with them, for what? To invite them to vivaty?
Justin, Didn't see this post until today when Cherry sent me the link. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, and we are truly touched. While we are still very sad without Lively, the good news is Livelyzens live on – we are an active community and we are looking to do some good things going forward. Hope Vivaty is coming along well and wish you good luck. Will stop by sometime to check it out :)
