Reading the book Professional Techniques for Video Game Writing, I came across an interesting line from Jay Posey on the importance of innovation.
Innovate! Innovation needs to occur on both levels for the Narrative Designer. From the design side, games are still in the process of figuring out how to tell a good story without becoming a movie or something other than a game.
Except I want to do exactly that, it’s my dream to create something akin to a real time movie. Granted Posey is talking about writing for the game industry and a key part of any industry is knowing your audience. That’s also why I’m happy that I don’t exactly work in the game industry, but the serious game industry building training simulations. Our audiences are a bit different and that allows us to experiment in ways the larger game industry might not.
And with all that experimentation hopefully we’ll learn what it would take to create real time movies. Then we’ll just need to find the audience, and audience of me’s.
