About Me

I guess you can call me a product manager turned social computing strategist who failed at screenwriting. You learn a lot in failure.

Fail faster to succeed sooner.

- David Kelly, CEO of IDEO

I'm not sure how much the story knowledge helps with the day job, but as Seth Godin says, every marketer tells a story. The years of studying screenwriting did introduce me to the concept of interactive story. However interactive story is an even tougher nut to crack, more paramount to discovering of the Northwest Passage. Of course every explorer has their purposed route and after seeing the metaverse I was at least convinced that what everyone else was trying was wrong (rather bold of me I know). Everyone sees the interactive story conundrum as something to solve, but it is something to be discovered as early film pioneers discovered continuity editing. And if all we need is experimentation that can better be done by artists.

Movies did not flourish until the engineers lost control to artists - or more precisely, to the communications craftsmen. The same thing is happening now with personal computers.

- Paul Heckel from The Elements of Friendly Software Design

So I spend my free time trying to tweak emerging technologies such as AI and the semantic web to where artists can use them to experiment with story in the metaverse - immersive story. And if we're lucky, that experimentation may lead to true interactive story. Think of it as agile development to interactive story.

Habit of being early to the party

In a way all this talk of immersive story plays into my day job as a social computing strategist. Immersive story will provide unique opportunities for product placement and user generated ads - marketing in general. Of course that is years away, but I have a habit of being a bit early to things. I was all over cloud computing while working at Yahoo!, but we all know where they told me to go with that project.

Immersive story is dramatic narrative for the metaverse, where a player interacts in real time with computer controlled NPCs and virtual environments. Having failed at screenwriting, I've been consumed by the idea of immersive story and how it could just be the killer app of the metaverse.

Justin GibbsI'm a social computing strategist by day who spends his free time exploring anything related to immersive story and trying to flesh out requirements for an immersive story engine (TapBot).
